Stump Grinding and Removal

Once a tree is down, the stump is usually still sitting there. Grinding it down and removing it completely are two different jobs with two different price tags, and which one makes sense depends on what you plan to do with that spot in the yard.

Grinding vs full removal

Stump grinding uses a machine to chew the stump down to below ground level, usually a few inches under the soil line. It is faster and cheaper, and it leaves the roots in the ground to break down naturally over the next few years. This works fine if you plan to put grass, mulch, or a garden bed over the spot.

Full stump removal pulls the stump and the major roots out of the ground entirely. It costs more and leaves a bigger hole to fill, but it is the right call if you are putting a structure, driveway, or new planting with its own root system in that exact spot.

What it costs in Hugo

Stump removal or grinding typically runs $100 to $500 or more, mainly based on the stump's diameter and how deep the roots have grown into Hugo's clay soil (HomeAdvisor 2026). A small stump from a yard tree is usually on the low end; a large, old oak or pecan stump with a wide root base will run higher.

If you are having a tree removed and already know you want the stump handled too, ask for both as one quote. Doing it in the same visit is usually cheaper than calling a crew back out later.

What's left behind

Grinding leaves wood chips and sawdust, which most people either rake up or leave as mulch over the spot. Full removal leaves a hole that needs to be filled with dirt and leveled before you plant grass or anything else over it.

A stump left alone in Hugo's humid climate will eventually rot and can draw termites or carpenter ants, so it is worth dealing with even if you are not in a hurry, rather than leaving it indefinitely.

Getting equipment to the stump

Stump grinders range from small walk-behind machines to larger towed units, and which one a crew brings depends on how close they can get to the stump. A stump near a driveway or open yard is usually quick work. A stump tucked behind a fence, close to a flower bed, or on soft ground after rain can take longer, since the crew may need a smaller machine or extra time to protect what's nearby.

If your yard has more than one stump, for example from a storm that took down several trees at once, ask about a per-stump rate for the additional ones. Crews that are already set up and on site often charge less for each extra stump than they would for a single separate visit.

Questions

How long does stump grinding take?

Most single stumps are ground down in under an hour. Larger or multiple stumps can take half a day, depending on size and root depth.

Will the roots keep growing back after grinding?

No. Grinding kills the stump's ability to send up new shoots. The roots left underground will slowly decompose over the next few years instead of regrowing.

Can I plant grass right over a ground stump?

Usually yes, once it is ground below the soil line and you add a layer of topsoil. Ask the crew to grind it low enough for whatever you plan to plant there.

Is it cheaper to grind or fully remove a stump?

Grinding is almost always cheaper. Full removal costs more because it takes extra equipment and time to pull out the roots, not just the visible stump.
