Land and Lot Clearing

Clearing a lot or a few acres is a different job than removing one yard tree. It usually means taking down multiple trees, clearing brush and undergrowth, and sometimes grinding stumps across a wider area, for building, fencing, a driveway, or opening up pasture.

How clearing is priced

Land clearing is almost always priced by the acre or by the day, not per tree, because the crew is pricing equipment time and the density of what is being cleared, not one removal. Dense, wooded lots cost more per acre than open brush with scattered trees, since there is simply more wood and more stump grinding involved.

Get a walk-through quote in person rather than over the phone. A crew needs to see how thick the growth actually is, whether there is usable timber worth saving or selling, and how the equipment will get in and out, since Hugo's clay soil can get soft and hard to drive heavy equipment over after rain.

What's typically included

Most clearing quotes cover cutting down trees and brush, grinding or hauling off stumps, and either chipping or burning the smaller debris, depending on local burn rules. Grading or leveling the cleared ground afterward is usually a separate step, so ask whether it is included or priced on top.

Permits and burn rules

Most rural, unincorporated land in Oklahoma does not require a permit just to remove trees on your own property, but burning cleared brush is handled separately from tree removal and often needs a burn ban check or a county permit depending on conditions. Call Choctaw County or the Hugo fire department before any open burning, especially during dry stretches.

How long a clearing job takes

A single acre of light brush with a few scattered trees can sometimes be cleared in a day with the right equipment. A heavily wooded acre, especially with large hardwoods or pine that need to be felled, cut up and hauled, can take several days to a week or more. Multiple acres of dense timber, which is more common out toward Antlers and Pushmataha County than right around Hugo, can stretch into multiple weeks.

Weather plays a bigger role here than in a single tree removal. Hugo's clay soil gets soft after rain, and heavy clearing equipment can tear up wet ground or get stuck, so crews often have to wait out a wet stretch before they can safely bring machinery onto softer land.

Deciding what to save

Before a crew starts, walk the property and mark any individual trees you want kept, whether for shade, a property line, or just because you like them. It's much easier to clear around a tree that's flagged ahead of time than to try to save one after equipment is already moving through the lot.

If there's merchantable timber on the land, mainly larger pine or hardwood, ask the crew whether that wood has any resale value that could offset part of the clearing cost. Not every job has enough volume to make that worthwhile, but it's worth asking before everything gets chipped or burned.

Questions

How is land clearing priced compared to removing one tree?

By the acre or by the day, not per tree. The crew is pricing equipment time and how dense the land is, since that drives how long the job takes.

Can I get a quote without someone walking the land?

Usually not an accurate one. Density, access, and terrain vary too much to quote sight unseen, so most crews want to see the lot in person first.

Do I need a permit to clear my own land in Choctaw County?

Tree removal on rural, unincorporated land usually does not need a permit, but check with the county if your project involves grading, a new driveway, or burning the debris.

Can I burn the brush after clearing?

Check with Choctaw County or the Hugo fire department first. Burning is handled separately from the clearing work and can be restricted during dry or windy conditions.
